The “pkcrafts.com” is a project of Pekhang Enterprise, founded by Dr. Lobsang Tsering. He is a physician with a Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) from Johns Hopkins University. He believes that problem of unemployment and poverty can be mitigated through projects/enterprises that employ youths and that are house-hold based, labor intensive and that has the capacity to give employment opportunities to large number of peoples with reasonable incomes.
What has unemployment and poverty to do with public health? Poverty and unemployment are not necessarily public health issues but the health and other consequences of poverty and unemployment are. Dr. Lobsang believes that house-hold based industries that generate appreciable income to the family unit living below subsistence level will have positive impact on the health and the education status of the family because of the resultant increase in the paying capacity. Also cottage industries would reduce mobility and migration and the diseases associated with them.
People involved in health and development have tried with the idea of sponsorship to micro-crediting to improve the living standard of the needy. Micro-crediting is proving to be one of the most sustainable poverty alleviation projects. However those beneficiaries who are more enterprising or those who have acumen for marketing have usually succeeded. Many people at the bottom of poverty and social ladder have failed to reap the benefit of many of the micro-crediting schemes. Pekhang Enterprises will be focusing on the following issues:
- Product invention/innovation of household based/cottage industries
- Marketing research of household/cottage based products
- Assist in marketing of house-hold based products.
However, “pkcrafts.com” is a pure business venture of Pekhang Enterprises and this online venture is contracted to Mr Norsang who is the founder and CEO of “phayul.com”.
